Education Q&A

Yale Mba, MBA interviews

ECept Education > Online Degree

Q. I read Robin Cole's message on the East Coast trip. I'm glad that the trip was worth it. I'm flying out to Chicago on 10/10 to visit UMichigan, UChicago, and Northwestern. I had made up my mind to go out there but was still unsure that it would be worth the expense. Now I'm more excited than ever. Does anybody have any information or experience with these schools? Any information on Faculty to see, Admission people to talk to, etc would be greatly appreciated.

A. Sounds like you either have not notified the schools that you are coming yet or have not received any itenarary from them yet. If the former, notify them as soon as possible!!! I just came back from a MBA visit only to learn that they like two weeks advance notice. Just "showing up" will significantly decrease your Return on Investment, since they can probably arrange the interview (on-campus interview is much preferred to most schools), have someone take you to a class, and maybe eat lunch with some students. All of this is predicated on you letting them know that you are coming. Just call the schools and say that you are coming for a campus visit and they will take it from there. Good luck. I like U Chicago and Northwesterm myself, so if you want to post a trip report like Robin did, please do! I would appreciate it. If at all possible, I would recommend MBA aspirants visit at least the schools at the top of their list. Of the seven schools to which I applied, with one exception I was admitted to all those I visited, and rejected by those I didn't visit. Visiting gives you a chance to make a good impression on people who really count at the admissions office - a long-graduated alum can certainly shoot down your application, but is unlikely to swing a close call in your favour. Just as important, a school visit gives you a sense of what the program is really like - all B-schools are not the same! Look at it this way: you're about to make a $70,000 investment - isn't it worth $1000 to get it right? Another thing - I think you guys need to look away from your copies of Business Week and consider the Yale School of Management. We're at least a top 10 school by any quantitative measure, and more importantly, you'll enjoy your two years here. Can't say that about a lot of other "top" schools that spring to mind. I'll be glad to answer any questions about SOM ...
