Education Q&A

Should I get a MBA??

ECept Education > Online Degree

Q. Hey I am about to embark on my jr year in undergraduate study at Samford Univ and I was wondering what yal think about getting a masters in Business Administration. I really do not like the feeling of 2 more years of school but nowadays it seems like the only way to be well off. I plan on getting married after college then getting a job then think about getting a masters although I do not want to go to anymore school? Is it realy necessary to get a MBA nowadays or is it ok not to get one?

A. You can survive without an MBA, but if you want to be a little better off you should get your MBA. I am 3 weeks from completing undergrad. I too intend to get a job and work for a few years before going for an MBA. You may be sick of school (heck so am I), but as I have heard from many others you'll miss it when your gone. It is ok to not get an MBA and I do not think one should get one unless YOU want it. Now you might find that you are not as well off as you'd like to be a few years down the road. At that point you may very well decide you want an MBA. At least then you'll be motivated, which is better than getting an MBA just because everyone else seems to. There are those who are very successful without MBAs, but remember they are statistically few. I speak being 41 years old and having an MBA (1980, University of Florida). Do it BEFORE you get married. While it is good to get some work experience under your belt before getting an MBA (some schools now require it), if you are prone to spending all the money you earn...go for an MBA right out of undergrad. I'm wanting to go and do a Ph.D., but I owe too much money and have too many family responsibilities. The need for a MBA will depend upon your career goals. If you plan to pursue fulltime work and advance in the private sector, the MBA is becoming a very important credential. The degree gives you an extra boast, in promotions if everything else is equal. You need to focus on what you want out of a career. You might try going to work first and go in the evenings for your MBA. In that way, you will be able to see for yourself the actual benefit of the degree to you and your career.
