What Can You Do With A Business Degree

Q. Does the Master have the authority to "drop down" the Lodge, so that EA's or FC's can participate in the business of the Lodge without taking part in any vote?

A. Nothing an Oxford dictionary can't solve. It defines `class' as "all of the college or school students of a particular year" and "a group of students or pupils who are taught together." It refers to "students" in the plural. I will presume that your school teaches them how a lodge operates, as some lodges here have a mentor programme which goes into such things. Good for you. Still, actual experience is a better teacher than a classroom; at the very least it can augment. Really? I have yet to meet a Mason or talk to one on-line who has such a difficulty. In fact, there have been numerous posts over the years on various newsgroups stating nobody speaks for Freemasonry, as such is an impossibility, considering the structure of the fraternity. And some who have an over-rated sense of their own self-importance, and enjoy condescendingly reminding people of it, yes. Fortunately, they are very few in number. A vast majority of the people who post here are fine individuals who I'd certainly love to entertain in my lodge(s) some day and talk about the Craft. There's always something to learn. I've had the pleasure of meeting a couple whose comments I've read over the years. Bro. Savage, who commented initially on this topic, and I haven't met in person and I hope some day I can get to the Island and say hello. I suspect there was some debate in the Alabama Grand Lodge on that particular decision (we can do business in the lower degrees since 1998, but only the Masters can vote). (I wasn't on hand for that one, though I'm eligible to vote in GL now.) But I think it's been a good thing to let the EAs in to see the action occasionally. Because the majority of lodges here formed after the ruling, thus "that's the way it's always been done." Only two lodges on our roll were under the UGLE and one of them changed to the American ritual in 1877. Only five Lodges .. Nos 1, 10, 11, 12 and 13 (the latter three were brand new at the time of the ruling) worked in the 1st degree up to that point. The rest worked in the 3rd and all used an American form of ritual that they learned in their Mother Lodges prior to emigrating to Canada. No. 1 has been leading the way to have the option of going back to doing business the way it used to.
