Education Q&A

What can you do with a Social Studies degree?

ECept Education > Online Degree

Q. I noticed some people here are talking about going to college to study social sciences and history. But what can you do with a degree in that field? What is the point of going to college to study something like Ancient History? While it may be interesting, what can you do for a job once you get out of college (besides academia)?

A. But seriously, you need to develop some job skills so you can get a job in business somewhere. Your major probably won't lead directly to a job, but if you know how to use a computer well and have some summer or part-time experience, you'll be OK. Well I would like to major in something in college that would lead to a relatively high-paying and secure job compared to the norm. My GPA is around a 4.8 out of 5.5 and for the SATs I got a 670 for math and a 790 for verbal. I really hate math but everyone has told me that engineering is the way to go. History is my favorite and best subject and I would love to study Ancient History or Anthropology, however I also do not want to pay 100K for college to end up flipping pancakes at IHOP or something. I don't want to become a lawyer or doctor or anything else that would require going to school for 3 or more extra years. The CIA recently tried to recruit me to work for them as a "clandestine service trainee" (spy) in a Latin American country once I left high school. That sounds like an exciting job so maybe I will do that. Don't be a loser, doing something that you "really hate" for money will not bring you a happy and fulfilled life. If anything, you might become an old upper middle-class or wealthy man, probably resentful that you didn't do what you wanted. Becoming an old grouch doesn't sound fun, and I've seen it happen to several family members. I suggest you take the humanities major, and live a good life. If you are the adventurous type, I'd take the job with the CIA. At least if you become the grumpy old man, you would have some pretty cool stories to tell!
