Q. I am going to be a first year law student this fall and I want to know if other law students who use mac are able to access Westlaw and Lexis-Nexis through modem. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

A. Accessing Lexis and Westlaw on a Mac via modem is relatively easy, once provided with the requisite software. The two companies should provide you with software, once you arrive at school. Be forewarned, though, your school may not allow 1ls to use Lexis or Westlaw. The rationale here is that they may want you to learn how to research via the books (The Old Fashioned Way) before becoming hooked on Lexis and Westlaw. Yes. Although the Lexis software for Macs is poorly executed, Westlaw is fairly easy to use. Neither are great examples of Mac software, but they work. After you go thhrough the initial Westlaw & Lexis training you are given a free account and the MAC/IBM software to modem in. Strickly for ed. use. Lexis, shmexis. Law schools often do insist that you spend a year shepardizing and scouring the stacks without aid of a computer, but if you are wired and interested in the law you should really get a subscription to LJEXTRA!, the online service for lawyers offered by the publishers of the New York and National Law Journal. (The service includes the New York and National Law Journal online.) It is not the vast, case-law database that Lexis is, but it has many other databases and materials Lexis does not and will put you into direct contact with actual lawyers on-line in its various topical forums. It also has free online seminars from prominent legal practitioners and over time you will get a real feel for the way law is practiced as opposed to the way it appears in the classroom.
