Virginia Dental School, Dental school students at TuftsECept Education > Online Degree Q. Are dental school students at Massachusetts' Tufts University School of Dental Medicine... http://www.tufts.edu/dental ...under so much pressure as to interfere with the quality of dental school clinical patient care and followup? A. Probably not. If patient care is compromised, the student will fall into academic dodo with the administration. What the unnecessary pressure placed by dental schools on their students does is cause severe interpersonal problems with spouses, friends, and family as well as to create a cut-throat mentality amongst the student peers. It also creates a long-term/lifelong resentment/dislike/hatred for certain professors and many times for the school itself. This results in poor alumni contribution levels for some graduating classes e.g. PENN 79, Tufts 78. The University of Pennsylvania is such a school. It fosters/nurtures approximately half of its students ( ? Joel Eichen and Zugumba) and alienates the other half (me and many others). Tufts and Temple are such schools. Harvard is not and neither is BU. To re-iterate, Quality of care does not suffer. Only the student-clinician who is lead around by the nose by instructors who probably have less technical know how or common sense but have risen through the ranks by means of the Peter Principal suffers. We had a saying at PENN: Those that can, do; Those that can't (George DeRevere, Austin Robbins, Virginia Parks, Norm Stoller, Max Listgarten, D. Walter Cohen) teach. And don't forget the administrative pinheads like Jim Galbally that conspire unseen to make life just a little bit less tolerable for the student. Do you think that explains poor alumni contributions? Much as I liked going to Penn, I never contribute to them myself. I save my bucks for my dear Haverford College (and other charities that are important to me): there is only so much to go around. There existed a cut-throat atmosphere, for sure. I would be surprised that this doesn't happen elsewhere, but maybe it doesn't. I shrugged my shoulders, ignored that stuff, and did pretty well (a little Tagamet helped, too
