Q. Yesterday, the Massachusetts' Dept. of Ed. made two hugh decisions: 1. The state dropped its requirement of Physical Education. Gone, it is no longer required by state Law. 2. The Board decided to require all HS seniors to take the GED! It will have no bearing on student's graduation, but didn't say that would be the case next year. so why would a student even bother to try? If you show up, put your name on the paper, and leave, you have filled the requirement, right?

A. Wait till they discover that equating a GED to a diploma means that scads of kids will take the GED and be done by age 15 as I did ... They let you do this? I was accepted to college at 16, but was unable to attend because I would have not had a HS diploma, which put me at risk (I'm surprised at the number of jobs which require a HS diploma, even along with a college transcript). When I looked at the GED, just to give me SOMETHING, I was told that you have to be 21 to take the test. (This was in VA, in 1988). I like the idea of not forcing good high school students to stay in school and spend 2-3 years studying the same subjects they'll spend 2-3 yrs studying in college, and for students in the non-academic track, this gives more time to spend on learning the skills needed to get a job. This would let the schools spend the last 2-3 years teachin g the students who need extra instruction to meet minimum competency-the students who, now, tend to fall through the cracks. (Both my home state VA, and the one I'm now in, TX, have state mandated exit exams. I know many students who pass them in 9th grade, but then spend 3 more years in school. There are also many kids who spend 4+ years trying to pass the test-in classrooms with kids who passed it 2 yrs ago. No wonder some kids are bored and others can't keep up!)
