US Driving Skill ???

Q. US in F1 ?? Y.O.Y. are there not more N.American drivers in Formula 1 ?? I'm sure that most people would say that Formula 1 racing requires a higher level of driving skill than Noddy - sorry - Indy Car racing (there are numerous examples of this, Mansell, Andretti etc.). So the reason can't be that they figure they've reached the pinnacle of a driver's career when they get to Indy and don't wish to progress. I doubt also that the financial rewards in Indy etc, can match F1. The US has a 'car culture' as does the 'UK' with the latter having a considerably smaller population to choose from. You can even start driving earlier in the US too! I really cannot understand why the likes of Finland, Denmark etc can produce above avg drivers but *generally* (admittedly there have been some) the US cannot. Any ideas?

A. Could it be that they come up through their system which I believe has a lot of ovals on it, and dont concentrate on learning the real discipline of race driving which is proper circuits. Plus the embarrasment that was Michael Andretti has probably put a few of them off. Mainly i believe it is because they are all taught that the ultimate goal is either indycars or nascars and they dont really want to make the sacrifice of coming here where they may be shown up.
