University Of Toronto Continuing EducationECept Education > Continuing Education Q. Relatively new to the field and seeking opinions on the distance courses/certificate called (something like) Professional Translation for the Workplace (English-French) offered at the School of Continuing Education of the University of Toronto. I am currently taking the second of three course in this "program" and was wondering about the "value" of the certificate. How good a program is this? Is the certificate recognized? Basically- what is it worth? Am also looking for general information about accreditation and getting work and recognition in the field. Would appreciate any "beginner" advice. A. I completed all of my translation training/studies in Toronto - first at Ryerson (continuing education) with a Business French Translation Certificate which basically didn't even get me a raise, although the company I worked for did pay for all of my courses - secondly at the Glendon School of Translation (York University) where they offer Specialised Honour Degrees and Masters in Translation (4 and 5/6 year programs) that are well worth the time and effort. I wasn't aware of any U of T courses offered in Translation...is this recent ? Certificates are recognised as being a "plus" on your resume, but I wouldn't go so far as saying you'd actually pass ATIO examination with the training. If I were you, I'd make an appointment to see someone at the School of Translation (Glendon) - they are quite knowledgeable with regards to that sort of thing, especially when it comes the different types of training available. They offer night courses and try to accomodate time schedules...
