Distant education -> University of Phoenix Online ??ECept Education > Online Education Q. Is anyone familiar with the University of Phoenix Online.... They currently have an enrollment special out and I'm having to fill out a lot of paper work which is going back and forth, and sometimes the same forms but mostly financial aid stuff. Is enrolling at an Online University usually this much trouble ? Almost time for classes to begin and these forms are still going back and forth between us. Does anyone have any experiences with this particular school ? A. I have been a student at the University of Phoenix since the end of 1998; I have only 10 more classes to go. UoP (as we fondly call it) is a FOR-PROFIT university with a board and shareholders to please. At the time I enrolled, it was one of only a few, if not the only, regionally accredited, university offering a complete online education. Think about this before you settle on UoP. 1) It is very expensive to attend; 2) The university, while growing in reputation, DOES answer to those other than its students; 3) Students complete UoP sometimes, who would be unable to graduate from an accredited onground program because they lack the communication skills (language/writing) to do so, in spite of having good technical skills; 4) UoP has recently initiated e-texts, requiring an e-book viewer/reader with a cost of an additional $70/class; 5) If you look hard enough, you CAN find a program with as much as or MORE quality for a more reasonable rate; 6) Each class has a duration of 5 weeks, and financial aid WILL NOT COVER your complete tuition for a year; AND 6) Contrary to its requirements that students must be employed at least part-time, UoP has a growing population of unemployed students, who could prove to be at a disadvantage, since the classes are formatted to be integrated into a student's job responsibilities. Why am I still there? I'm used to the program, and I don't wish to risk losing any of my credits to transfer. Would I choose UoP again? I don't think so, because I firmly believe that in order for an educational program to be true to its students, it should be in the business of education --- not education as a business. It is then that the student's benefits come first.
