Jump Start with training course?

Q. This developer, with 30+ years experience (Fortran, C), needs a jump-start in Java. Does anyone recommend a 1-2 day training course? Or do you just recommend hitting the bookstores and putting aside a week on my own?

I usually find training courses a waste of time. I can read slides far faster than someone can present them. Often the person giving the course knows little beyond the course materials. If they do, the other students resent questions outside the strict course material. They are mainly of value to people who otherwise would never be able set aside the time to learn something new. Most instructors will ask participants to turn off cellphones. With the internet, there is a 24-hour available pool of people who are usually willing to answer any well-phrased question. Another alternative is coaching. Here someone like me makes up exercises for you creating them on the fly to your level of comprehension, guiding you toward the particular areas you find most interesting. You work mostly on your own. The idea is you learn piece by piece how to create the full application you want. You would have a hard time seeing the big picture on your own to know even how to start. With coaching you can ask as many questions as you want, and you can ask wooly questions. On the net, you pretty well have to ask questions you can't easily find in a textbook or through google.
