BMW Driving School, Toronto?

Q. I was wondering if the BMW driving school level 1 in Toronto is worth the $500. Also, are the cars manual or automatic or do you have a choice? I'd like to learn how to do the advanced driving but I only own a 330 auto and don't know how to drive a manual.

A. That's a definite 'maybe'. Most BMW *CCA* schools cost a little less than that ($300-400) for two days on a racetrack. If this is a $500 half-day school then I start to wonder about the cost/benefit ratio. (Oops! Is that $CDN?) For a full day, it's definitely cheaper than Skip Barber and a few others for similar training. At the very first level, however, I'm convinced you get the best value for your money in a club school. Watkins Glen and Lime Rock aren't that far from you. Ya got me there. Do you *want* to learn how to drive a manual? If so, don't use these schools for it. Beg, borrow, rent, or steal a car to learn on. All of the driver schools I know of assume a basic working ability to shift the car *if* you're driving a stick. However, *none* I know of require you to drive a stick; an automatic is just fine. Much of what you learn is braking and turning control and vehicle dynamics. Having to worry about shifting actually complicates matters. If you just want to learn how to drive *your* car better, check out BMW CCA or BMW CCC for club schools.
