Stress Training = Fewer Deaths? Problem about Management ?ECept Education > Supervisor Training Q. Stress Training = Fewer Deaths? Problem about Management ? I don't think ANYONE would argue to attempt to simulate EVERY problem that might happen! I've noticed a definite REMOVAL of any attempt to create any stress with divers in a class... This, IMNSHO is NOT doing them any favors in the long run. A. -to create dangerous situations where the potential for injury is significant is irresponsible. Keeping our students safe is paramount, and complex "realistic scenarios" to test actual stress management can be risky. The author of the test may, in fact, misjudge the risk level and contribute to the probability of an accident. -I wouldn't take anything out, but I wouldn't add anything that comes to mind at this time. For example, I wouldn't add cave diving simulations to basic open water training. I know that isn't Carl's message, but I just think the basic skills are adequate when combined with common sense and alertness. Having said that, if a diver changes geographic locations or diving activities, like beginning to do wreck diving, etc., additional training is in order for many divers. In my diving career, additional training has always helped develop my safe diving practices. However, this training built on an adequate basic set of skills from the OW training. Perhaps experience in solving problems provided a comfort level that could not be gained from training. A side note...During open water training (not PADI), we were taken to 25' and our air was turned off. The instructor looked into our eyes until they dilated and then he sent us to the surface. Yes, it built confidence, but the risk of waiting until our eyes dilated was far greater than the benefits provided, in my opinion. The 25' swim was sufficient. Where do we draw the line between "teaching stress management" and teaching SCUBA diving? I dunno. Let's to stress management on dry land and SCUBA problem solving underwater. When we test stress to the edge of limitations for the average diver, we will eventually exceed the limits for some. Lets teach techniques that will prevent the stressful situation.
