Q. I'm studying for the GED test and I'm having a tough time with math. Right now I'm on algebra. I'm having trouble simplfiying problems with parentheses. Here's a picture I took from the GED book I'm using http://img409.imageshack.us/img409/7186/algebrazq5.jpg Even with this GED book I still just don't get it. Also, if anyone knows of any better GED books that explans the answers more thoroughly for slow people let me know. Currently, I'm using a Steck Vaughn Ged book.

A. Did you look at the right hand column there? It shows the steps to get from the first equation to the last. Is there a particular step you don't understand? Here are the steps. 2x(3x-6) + 5x We apply the distributive property. = (6x^2 - 12x) + 5x We need to combine like terms. = 6x^2 + (-12x + 5x) The x terms are like terms (but not the x^2 term). = 6x^2 - 7x Ask again and explain what it is you do not understand about these steps.
