Q. All five regents schools in Kansas do and I believe the same is true of Iowa. Oklahoma, Missouri, Nebraska and Colorado all offer majors, but I don't know if all of their state universities do. So if you have no education major, how are your teachers trained? Or are they?

A. To answer your question, the course of study for prospective teacher in California depends on whether they are interested in teaching elementary ed. or secondary ed. If they are interested in elementary ed. they are required to complete a BA in Liberal Studies which requires 45 upper division units in four areas: Math, Physical and Life Science, Social Science and English. After they have completed their subject matter courses they become Education majors and are required to take 30 units (I think) in Elementary ED. ( I don't have an Elementary Ed credential so I can't give you any more specifics) If the individual wishes to teach in the field of Secondary Ed. the student must complete a major in one of 16 subjects, completing specific courses to insure subject matter competancy. Or, they can take the NTE and Praxis exams to prove competancy. Again, they must have a BA or BS before they begin teacher training. I completed 30 units in graduate level Education classes--Reading in Secondary Schools, Curriculum and Instruction, Philosophy of Education, Adolescent Psychology among others. Students spend the last two semesters observing and student teaching. Additionally, all prospective education majors must take the CBEST before being admitted to the program and must have a 3.0 GPA. After completing the above program, teachers receive a preliminary credential. In order to receive a clear credential, they must complete 150 hours of addtional coursework, including Secondary School Health, Education of Exceptional Children and Educational Technology plus other elective courses. Despite what you may think (or have heard) about teachers in California, we are highly trained.
