Becoming a Professional Sales Training Speaker ?

Q. Becoming a Professional Sales Training Speaker ? I want to make the jump. Well, I'm already making the jump, somewhat. I don't have the capital to join NSA (and couldn't travel 5 hours each way to Seattle either), and I can't drop everything to become a speaker. My wife and 5 kids would object, unless I brought in LOTS of money VERY quickly - and from what I've garnered, neither of those are likely, and aren't really even the point of speaking, anyway. Perhaps my biggest obstacle has been credibility. I don't have a doctorate, MBA, or other initials behind my name. I'm not in a wheelchair, though I have a disability, minor though noticeable. I'm not a celebrity. I'm not a financial success. What I am is a survivor of life. I speak on self-esteem issues, goal-setting, and leadership. I offer Communication Coaching to individuals and groups. And I can come in and lead sales trainings, not because I have a degree in training, but because I have years of sales experience.

A. -I wouldn't mind doing that myself except for two things. First of all, I don't feel that I am dynamic enough. Secondly, I don't really have anything interesting to talk about! Anne Barab spoke at TLI and she is so funny, had a great presence and really knows how to get the audience involved in her speech through real life scenarios. I really don't have anything like that. I must say, I was rather honoured to be asked to speak at the TLI ATM Speakers Showcase, but I am for from an accomplished speaker. I know I did a number of things wrong. My biggest problem is vocal variety. I'm first to admit that. But if you have all the points down, if you're dynamic, have variety, if you use your gestures, use the stage, I don't see why you couldn't make it as a professional speaker. -It seems that you are doing all of the things that you need to do, but need to listen to some of your speeches. On your web site you mention Perspective, Passion, Persistence. Let me give you my perspective, but first my credentials: I haven't had a real job for 18 years. In that time all of my income has been derived from speaking and training. As well as delivering training, I also do training design, for the same clients. My business model is usually: Design the training for a project, deliver it to their trainers as a train the trainer, then monitor their delivery to the staff. -You bring up two things that I struggle with constantly. A. Hearing my own speeches - I've always been better at motivating others than myself. I likely gravitate towards self-esteem issues because I have my own share of them. B. Leading with my disability on my website. That's pretty recent, actually, a bit of an experiment. I've always kept my disability in the background, virtually ignored it and gone on with my life. But the more I speak, the more people seem to want to hear about it. But I don't like the way it sounds either. I've never wanted to be a "disabled speaker", simply a speaker who happens to be disabled. -Sometimes information that appears self-evident are real switch-turners for my audiences and those that I coach in Public Speaking. Having been exposed to sales training for years, for example, made my suggestion to a counselee today about her 60 second networking commercial about leading with benefits instead of features seem like elementary to me, but completely changed her own view of the mortgage business.
