Question about selling a training course ?

Q. I faced a situation I never faced before. I used to develop my own training courses for IT Security (and I was ever the instructor). Now a company asked me to develop training material for IT Security, and to sell the material to them, so they'll be the owners. I don't have idea of the prize in the market for such an activity.

A. -I've done lecturing work for major training companies. Most of them reckon a day's training takes 8-12 days to develop. Rates are usually 20% or so shy of training rates. -I work on 15 to 1 (15 days per day of training) and more if there are complex labs. 8 to 1 is going to be not much more than basic slides (IMHO), especially when you take alpha/beta deliveries, etc. into account. -There are many options. Some thoughts. 1. If you sell it, then you may wish to retain the right to use it yourself and to further develop it for other clients. 2. You might wish to enter into a royalty deal - you get, say, 15% of sales. 3. You might combine 2 with an up front amount - for example UKP 5000. 4. You might want to combine this with a maintenance deal. You will do basic maintenance, for example, for free (ie fix typos, etc) or do major additions for a fee. My rule of thumb is to try to work out your development costs, and charge at least double that. Value your time at commerical rates. Thus if you have spent 10 days developing the material, a starting point would be UKP 10k. You can then vary this based on the points above - I thought of that as an option. Will discuss this with the training center. I told them that I ever update my own training material (that's more advanced) on a monthly basis. Perhaps this point can convince them of establish some arrangement so we keep doing business...
