Registered Nurse Continuing Education

ECept Education > Continuing Education

Q. I would find it useful, and possibly others would, to have an idea of how the states and other countries structure nursing. If there is a FAQ available please point me in the right direction. Yours confused but willing to be enlightened.

A. LPN: licensed practical nurse (also sometimes LVN, ...vocational...) Usually 12-18 months practical patient care education, not at college or university level, most states limit care in some ways, ie, no IV meds, hanging blood, etc. There are exceptions to these restrictions. RN: Registered nurse, one who has either 3 years in a hospital-based school, 2 years for an associate's degree in a junior college with a nursing concentration, or 4-5 yrs in a college or university with a nursing major, ho has passed the NCLEX licensure exam given by the individual states (no national licensure yet) CEU: Continuing education units, sometimes abbreviated CE's. Units, usually 50-minute hours, of participation in approved continuing education in nursing or nursing-related topics; many states require a certasin number of CEU's for periodic relicensure (but not all do, strangely) ADN: A nurse with an associate's degree (two yrs, AS, associate in science w/ nursing concentration, or AA, assoc in arts (not usually an nursing degree) NP: Nurse practitioner, a nurse with advanced education and training who is licensed to practice in an advanced role, often including independence in medication prescription, midwifery, family practice, or other specialty, either with or without physician association FNP: Family nurse practitioner BSN: Bachelor's in science in nursing (4-5 year college/university degree) MN: master's in nursing, 1-3 yr graduate (post bachelor's) study, sometimes required for NP
