How do you think about Parent Taught Drivers Ed?ECept Education > Driver Education Q. He will be 16 next year and can get his drivers' license. We have Geico insurance, and I think that they sock it to you of the dependent doesn't have a certificate from a driving school or has taken drivers' ed in public school. Might be unaffordable unless he can get the price break for having completed an acceptable course. I think I heard that there is some computer driving simulator /course that does qualify but don't know the name of the program. He is already set up with a nice Windows PC and Thrustmaster driving wheel. I haven't looked into the cost of a private drving school, but I am sure it will cost a lot. Ideas? How do you think about Parent Taught Drivers Ed? A. All good suggestions from the others. The only thing I might add is to take a pure homeschooling approach. Everything that a Gov't entity does is by written law or regulation. Somewhere in some musty / dusty there is a regulation that enumerates the standards that must be met to satisfy the licensing requirements. It will also state who may teach and the qualifications needed which may be as simple as a licensed driver with a acceptable level of violations. You could take those standards and develop a curriculum for approval by whatever state board covers it. With this information in hand you might even blaze a bureaucratic trail for others in your state. Terry was right, here in Texas you fill out a form and the DPS sends you the parent taught drivers ed packet. See the link below for the link on our Parent Drivers Ed .... just for an example. http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/administration/driver_licensing_control/... _issuance/parenttaught.html I don't want to start a battle, but the person that said to wait was right on the mark. We had 3 fatality accidents in the space of 2 wks with 16 yr old drivers that all involved youthful misjudgment. No hot rodding or anything. I know that ours will be driving with supervision for well over a year before they get turned loose.
