how're you going to adapt driver's ed for me?ECept Education > Driver Education Q. OK, now, I've told you my disability, I've told you my wants and needs. Now, how're you going to adapt driver's ed for me? It's Show 'n Tell time. A. Let's look at Rodney's obsession with Driver's Ed. I had an excellent course in Driver's Ed--I credit that course with my accident free driving record. We talked about driving, and we got away from school to drive, but the focus of the class was on safety awareness and what to do in an emergency. I would dread to think of a Driver's ed course that didn't cover these topics. I would think that a blind person would have a LOT to LEARN and a LOT to CONTRIBUTE about safety awareness and emergency response. Chances are that a blind person might be a passenger in a car where such knowledge would be important or save a life. Also Blind people do have children with sight, (imagine that), and a blind parent would like to contribute some knowledge and skills to their child's driving education, even if they can't do it all. Defensive driving is an ATTITUDE, not a skill--it is an attitude that any blind person is in a perfect condition to pass on to others--even students in a Driver's Ed course. Rodney, et. al., also has some theoretical flaws regarding the nature of education. Wouldn't it be a better place to live if schools taught HUMAN VALUES like respect and inclusion along with the 3 Rs? There is plenty of research literature on this point. What if the students in a High School Driver's Ed class learned to appreciate the advantage of sight and the privelege of driving? What if the presence of a blind student, striving for excellence, and struggling hard to learn and to belong, inspired them all to be better students and better human beings--is that a wasted class?
