Would I be able to exchange my UK driving licence for Ontario's Driving licence or do I have to take a driving test.ECept Education > Driver Education Q. Would I be able to exchange my UK driving licence for Ontario's Driving licence or do I have to take a driving test. A. I'm afraid for Ontario you'll have to take a test. Ontario has a graduated lisence system, starting with a basic written test to get your G1 lisence which is pretty similar to an Learners Permit in UK. then you have that for i think 8-12 months and then you can take a practical test to get a G2 lisence which allows you to drive on yoru own but has restrictions like you cant go on the 400 series highways etc. Then after another period of 8-12 months you can take the full practical test to get a full G lisence which allows you full driving privelages for your car. ( the exact times are from memory the ontario dvla type site has the exact info, but thats roughly how it goes) Now, if you are coming from the UK, and can show 2 years or more of driving experience and your UK lisence has no penalty points etc, you can pu tin to take your full test straight away, so youll do the eye sight thing, a written test then the full road test and if you pass you egt yoru full G and thats that. If you fail you can then get a G2 lisence and book the test again, if you fail that you are back down to a G1 and have to take that test to get a G2 again and work back up the graduation, i'm not sure exactly which ones you fall back to when. but you get 60 days on your UK lisence as a new resident before you have to get an Ontario one. when you go tto take yoru test you have to surrender your UK lisence till you egt a full G lisence, to prevent you driving after you fail a test if that happens. so i guess the best bet is to use the 60 days to get a few refresher lessons, get used to driving in Ontario etc, then book yoruself in and hopefuly pas sthe test and get your G. i have heard it isnt too hard. i havent done it yet, ill have that to look forward to next sumemr hopefuly, hehe.
