Does online teaching work ?

Q. I am currently around the 2k - 1k level and i feel i need a strong player for explaining things to me and playing a good style if i want to get to the next level. "Just" playing games and reading books - i feel there is something lacking, at least it might be of great value to have someone to occasionally put me on the right track. I really wonder about this: Can you reach say 2-3 dan level on your own without a teacher to guide you ? How much is a teacher needed in the process of getting stronger at go? And: Is online teaching a good way to fill the gap of not having a strong player around you to ask questions and play games ? There are several people offering online teaching on KGS or IGS for money (Guo Juan, Alexandre Dinerchtein, Ion Florescu, ...) and i would greatly appreciate if you could tell about your experience with online teaching. I am a student right now and, say, spending 200 Euro for some teaching games is big money in my eyes - has a teacher such an impact to be worth that money ?

A. I have been a student of Mr. Yilun Yang on line and it has benefitted my game tremendously. I would say I improved two stones in a year, from 2 dan to 4 dan. For me it has been worth the money. I couldn't say for you, of course. It depends on what improvement in go is worth to you. I don't know about other teachers specifically but some people have said good things about many of them.
