I'm wondering how long realistically it would take me to be prepared for a UK driving test.ECept Education > Driver Education Q. I'm wondering how long realistically it would take me to be prepared for a UK driving test. To put into context, I got a US license in 1994, but I let it lapse (after moving to the UK) and haven't driven for the last couple of years. I don't intend to own a car, but on a few occasions, I think it might be useful to hire one. I've driven in the UK quite a few times in the past (hire cars), and grew up here, so I'm not completely unfamiliar with the roads. That said, I have only ever driven automatic transmissions- I'm also quite aware that the test here is quite a bit more stringent than the one I would have gotten in the US. However, my general driving skills were OK in the US, and at least in an automatic seemed OK over here- I've driven in UK cities as well as rural areas and the motorways. I'm intending to take lessons here obviously, but was wondering how quickly I could get up to standard. Any rough ideas- especially from someone who might have been in a similar situation? A. First off, I can't relate to your situation, but I took just over 20 lessons to learn from scratch and pass my test (with a 5 month gap in having lessons). Obviously some people take longer, and some not so long, and it is difficult to assess without knowing how OK your driving is. I suggest you to take a lesson (in a manual) and then you can decide whether you want to learn in a manual or an auto. Manual is preferable as it entitles you to drive both and whilst autos are available on most cars, manuals are more common. Personally I don't think driving a manual is a difficult skill to master, but I'm not you. Your instructor will also be able to give you a better idea as to how long it will take to get up to a standard to take a test. Bear in mind that you will probably, depending on how busy the test centre is, have to book your test at least a month in advance. This will give you plenty of time for extra lessons to make sure you are ready for the test.
