So what is the big deal about driving an overpriced race car?

Q. Ever see a thing called the Olympic Games? Did you notice that there are like thousands of people with impressive skills? The fact that there are only a dozen silly overpriced F1 cars does not mean there are only a dozen people who can drive them. There are at least 120 million people walking around and chewing gum who could drive them. And I am being conservative. The fantasy that people build around F1 is way overblown. The Navy and Air Force train thousands of people to be pilots in planes that go faster than F1 cars on a regular basis. And they pull more G's and there is a lot more risk. So what is the big deal about driving an overpriced race car?

A. Years ago SI rounded up a bunch of PhD types to try to analyze sports in terms of difficulty. I understand that it is sort of arbitrary in terms of what criteria they use and how that they it. At any rate hockey goalie was rated the most difficult and auto racer the least difficult. To put it another way; a driving school has a higher graduation rate than any other kind of school you can name. Short classes and no homework. The F1 fans get really carried away with the awestruck reverence routine. I guess Mario Andretti would know as well as anyone. Mario should write a book!
