MBA Distance Learning ProgramsECept Education > Distance Education Q. I am looking at MBA distance learning programs and have found six that meet my general criteria of being accredited. Accrediatation was important as I may want to pursue a PhD and teach busines at some later point. Comments from any member of this forum would be appreciated on any aspect the following programs: Regis University University of Phoenix Stephens College Keller Graduate School Colorado State University Auburn University If anyone is interested I have an MS Excel spreadsheet showing the pertinent details of these programs including number of courses required, course length, number of credits, tuition cost, total fees, GMAT, recommendation letters, start times and a comparison of the courses offered by each school. The spreadsheet compares the schools to the UALR Executive MBA program. A. All the schools you list are quality schools. Some people look for the "top 10" (etc.) lists that magazines do, which is not unreasonable, since presumably some employers do the same. The only publication that rates MBAs worldwide is The Economist, which, each November, publishes "Which MBA: a critical guide to the world's best programs." (Published in North America by Addison-Wesley). While more than 30 American progams are listed, none is distance learning. Of the 20+ British programs listed, 5 or 6 also have distance learning. Is this Economist bias, or logically defendable, or perhaps some of each. Another important issue: a fair number (my guess now: about a third) of Ph.D. programs do not accept ANY MBA as meeting their Master's requirement for admission. Their argument is that if one wants to teach in universities, one should have done a more academic Master's, such as an MS in finance or economics or marketing. So if there is a specific doctoral program one has in mind, one should check the policy before embarking on an MBA from any school. The type of degree is of little importance in applying for a Ph.D. program. The more important questions are: did you complete a thesis and did you have research methodology and stats? The MBA degree is subject to many different views right now. Many feel it is an outdated model that has served its purpose and it is time to put it to rest. Others feel it is the terminal degree for busiess and management. Most MBA programs are still teaching the "command and control" paradigm of management. Strategic planning and finance, marketing and accounting. This model seems antiquated. US West just released its CEO with a $25 million golden parachute while telling its workers in its headquarters building that they could no longer have bottled water due to the cost. A typical "MBA" system.
