Distance Education School,Frugal Graduate School Suggestions?ECept Education > Distance Education Q. Does anyone have any frugal suggestions on _ACCREDITED_ graduate school programs by distance education? A. I know of (including the one I work for now) do it by reimbursement, and then it's 75% (which is certainly nothing to sneeze at)... but I'd have to come up with the money up front and wait months for repayment. For graduate work, it's considered a "special circumstance" and definitely requires approval, and a B grade or better is necessary for reimbursement. Also, if I leave the company within 1 year of having received an educational benefit, I must reimburse the company 75%, within 2 years 50%, within 3 years 25%. Kind of puts the pressure on, although one would hope that if one DID leave the company, the money would be well worth it to pay for it. Graduate school, however, from what I have seen is VERY expensive. AND, from what I have seen in my local area, the choices are quite limited.... hence my query. Going to graduate school often entails sacrifice. There's a loss of income if you're leaving a job; you might have to move to another state and away from friends/family, but thousands of people do because they believe a graduate degree is worth the sacrifice. Your company's policy seems pretty reasonable to me. As you say, 75% tuition reimbursement is nice. The one year work committment is minimal. Here's what my siblings and I did to get "free" rides to graduate schools (none of us had to take out student loans): 1) Got a national full fellowship for four years. 2) Got into a national program sponsored by a large corporation which paid for the Masters degree right out of undergrad. 3) Got research or teaching assistantships through the graduate program working for professors. 4) Worked for a university full-time. The first two are the hardest to get, but possible. The last one means you can only go to graduate school part-time. When you say, "distance education", do you mean watching the class lectures on video and taking tests with a proctor? I think this type of school is usually really expensive. I took a few online software engineering classes at the University of Maryland and it was $500 per credit because I was out of state. I didn't really care that it was so expensive though because my company paid for it upfront. The most frugal thing to do is to go to a school where you can get in-state tuition. That way, even if you're company reimburses you for tuition and books after you get your B, you won't have to fork over tons of money ahead of time. Many state colleges have night classes for part-time students. I don't know about distance education, but graduate school in computer science (and most other technical fields) can be done quite frugally. Most such students get paid to attend.
