Distance Education Open University?

Q. I am studying towards an earth science degree with the Open University (no I don't wear flares and a kipper tie!!), Is there anything similar in Oz (i.e Distance learning) as I would like to continue my studies when me and my wife emigrate (hopefully). If so can I start studying before we go over there.

A. There's nothing as developed as the OU, which really pioneered the concept. However, you've a number of options: Open Learning Australia - http://www.ola.edu.au This offers degrees mostly through the University of South Australia. Unfortunately the UofSA is not among the most prestigious universities in Australia. Some universities have sizeable distance learning based departments. These include Monash - http://www.monash.edu.au and Macquarie - http://www.mq.edu.au Monash is part of the Group of Eight - the most prestigious universities in Australia, http://www.go8.edu.au. Macquarie is not part of the Go8 but is fairly well regarded. I'm not aware of any site that brings together all distance learning courses in one place, so you'll just have to visit each university website and see what they offer: http://au.dir.yahoo.com/Education/Higher_Education/Colleges_and_Unive... There's also the option of the University of London: http://www.londonexternal.ac.uk Finally, if you can arrange your studies so as to get some kind of intermediate qualification from the OU - such as one of their diplomas - this might be better than abandoning what you've already done. Transferring credit for incomplete courses, especially from overseas, is sometimes easier said than done. Check in advance and don't assume anything. You can also try TAFE (Technical and Further Education) for courses. They are based in every state/territory and courses can be done online, in person, by correspondence etc. Highly recommended! (I've done a few). They have allowed these for the Computer for commerce and industry course for the last year and might do this for other degree's. I have also been told you can do your disatation outside the uk and submit it by e-mail. Even thou the website says you carn't just check with your tutor.
