Distance Education Master Program?ECept Education > Distance Education Q. I'm looking into UMUC's online master of science degree in distance education. I was wondering if anyone new if the program is decent and worth the money and time that it will require. I don't want to enter into a program just to find out that it is poorly designed and implemented. I have heard mixed messages about UMUC in general, but nothing about this particular program. A. I don't know about UMUC's master's programs, but I can tell you about UMUC in general. I'm a sophomore and have gone to UMUC completely online since my freshman year. I've been pleased with the quality of education and the schools credibilty overall, although I think it's a very expensive way to go to College. UMUC is an overpriced institution with an arogant approach to people in and out of the institution. When they were setting up the program they went befor the legislature to have them deny the legitimacy of other DL programs ad inherently inferior and then duplicated these programs the next year. You wont know what you are missing til you get into a job interview. You much have practical experience to augment this training. In 2000 I was unhappy enough about UMUC's CS program that I transfered to another college. Good grades - simply strange teachers. Let's see - the program is advertised as 100% asynchronous - and my advisor refused to use e-mail - only the telphone. One of the professors had a "thing" going with his "TA" -who barely had a BS - and tried to have her run the class - freeing him from having to deal with the students. The Chair had no idea what an MCSE was - even though UM was on record as accepting MCSE credentials as class credits. MY overall impression was that the fauclty had been dragged kicking and screaming to do this - and it was the "bottom rung" for UMUC adjuncts.
