Q. The April 2002 issue of "Missionalia", the journal of the Southern African Missiological society, is now available. This issue is a Festschrift for Willem Saayman, who taught missiology for 20 years at the University of South Africa, and was head of the missiology department at Unisa after the death of Professor David Bosch in 1992. This issue is also available separately as a book, "The making of an African person: essays in honour of Willem A Saayman".

A. We once had a fundi on writing study material for distance education speak at Unisa and he asked for samples of student assignments from various departments.We must have collected about 50 samples from various departments and faculties. He chose four as examples for the purpose of a training exercise -- a very good one, a very bad one, and a couple of in between ones. The very good one was from the missiology department (the very bad one was from Education). The expert commented that the missiology assignment showed the ability to think critically, and that the student was not afraid to develop his own ideas and to contradict the views of the teaching staff. The "education" one showed evidence of rote learning, and that rote learning was encouraged by the teaching staff, and that independent thinking by students was strongly discouraged.
