History Of Distance Education

ECept Education > Distance Education

Q. I need information on history of distance education, including its paradigm shifts and effects of the emerged technologies... Can anyone help? I've been searching internet for a long time but still i did not get the info...

A. What!? They shifted the paradigm? Why doesn't someone tell me these things? But seriously, you may need, or want, to develop your own model of the history of DE. Get all the little pieces of info, and put it together into what YOU see as the whys and hows and whens and whos and wheres of DE. Certainly there is no paradigm shift in the way that Distance Education occurs, but, there is a shift in the educational philosophis of DE and the approaches. for example there was a shift to programmed instruction and back. I just wonder whether there is an online or printed sources of information about this topic.. Routledge has published a lot on this subject. Some of this publishers' authors are Keegan, Holmberg, and Stewart. Some authors by other publishers are Van Dusen, Verduim, and Willis, just to name a few. Citations by these authors will lead you to hundreds of source documents. Most of the information that I have found has been in hard copy rather than on the Internet. A good university library will provide this information. Routledge has an Internet site which has a catalog. Hope this helps. Well certainly don't look to this newsgroup's "official" FAQ for any definitive and\or accurate information regarding the history of DL... which leaves out places like the U of London, Nova and the Union Institute... but, surprise, surprise, includes [the unaccredited] California Coast University (the FAQs author's Alma Mater)... Check out the ICDL for a good list of books - http://www-icdl.open.ac.uk/icdl/copyrite.htm
